Why Toners Fade; How to Keep Colour Fresh Longer

If you’ve ever left the salon with the perfect ashy blonde, caramel brunette, or soft shade, you’ll know how transformative a toner can be. Toners are the secret weapon that refine colour, cancel out unwanted tones, and give hair that polished, glossy finish. But many clients notice that their toner seems to fade much faster than their overall colour, so why does this happen?

Unlike permanent colour, a toner is usually a semi-permanent product. This means it sits on the outside layer of the hair rather than penetrating deep into the cuticle. While this makes it gentle and versatile, it also means the results are more delicate and gradually wash away with each wash. Sun exposure, heat styling, and even mineral-heavy water that we have in Bali can also speed up the fading process. Swimming in the ocean has an even harsher effect, with salt water stripping away both moisture and tone.

The good news? With the right care, you can extend the life of your toner and keep your colour fresh for weeks longer. First, switch to a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner – these formulas are far less harsh and help protect the colour pigments. Installing a shower filter at home can also reduce the impact of hard water on your hair. Next, try to reduce how often you wash your hair; every wash lifts a little bit of toner, so spacing out your wash days can make a big difference.

Using a colour-safe mask or purple/blue shampoo once or twice a week will help maintain the tone you love, while heat protection is a must before styling tools. And for blondes in particular, booking in for a toner in between highlight appointments is the best way to keep your shade looking salon-fresh.

At Jet Black Ginger, we always recommend a tailored aftercare routine, so you can enjoy your perfect colour for as long as possible…even with Bali’s sun and daily ocean swims in the mix!
